The Broke Family pt. 7

Their brother had often told them how they all used to be one big group of friends when they were teenagers, and Barry and Beau gladly accepted when they were invited to an outing the next weekend. It was a hard test to Barry's loyalty towards Melanie, because Eleonor Bendett was a girl who really took his breath away. Already when he had met her for the first time not so long ago he had found it hard to take his eyes off her.

Melanie could see how impressed Barry was with Eleonor, but while she was not sure if she could rely on Eleonor's friendship, she fully trusted him.

Barry proved to be worth her trust even if he happened to come past Eleonor's house quite often in the time that followed.
Eleonor and Lisa were equally tempting, both resembling what Barry considered the ideal girl more than Melanie. The fact that there were two such girls was probably one aspect which kept him faithful to her, although the main reason was his love for Melanie. As much as their early woohoo may have looked as the action of two careless teens, it actually created a solid foundation for this love. For Barry it led to a much stronger feeling of commitment than going steady with her.

When Dustin and Charlene graduated, it was another signal that their days as teens were numbered and Beau and Louise were talking about college all the time now.

Nobody was too surprised to hear them talking about engagement. When Beau watched Louise with her baby sister he could already imagine her having her own family with him.

Only the chance that he might have to wait for some time before Louise, who was after all a little bit younger, could join him at university, worried him. They belonged to the same generation, but he was unsure whether the authorities were seeing it the same way.
Being concerned about a possible temporary separation he tried to see Louise whenever he could.

He noticed that the others were beginning to see them as adults, because when he invited Louise back home after a date and they later came out of the bedroom in their underwear, Maurice, who met them in the kitchen, did not even blink.
Going to university was important to both of them, but there were moments when Beau regretted that he could not get married to Louise straight away.
When Dustin and Charlene had their graduation party they invited the family and afterwards Charlene came back with them and stayed overnight.
Maurice was as close to his daughter as he used to be and had long ago forgiven her for not informing him about her engagement. All of them strongly sensed the change of the generations though and Maurice had some difficulties to adapt to the fact that his daughter was ready to start her life as a full grown adult, while he and Brandi still felt as young as ever. Only when he remembered his own arrival at Pleasantview - and Charlene was already a teenager then - it made sense.
He and Brandi jointly governed a large family and many changes had taken place since his adult life had started with him becoming a single father.

It wasn't only the teenagers who were looking forward to step into a new period of their life, some of the younger children were close to turn into teens and they were aware of it.
They tried to stabilise the relationship with their best friends and invited them over more often.

And they tried to find new friends in those of their age group who they didn't know so well yet.

Many toddlers had grown up by then and they were meeting new children all the time. Some of them they liked a lot, but Joy was so close to becoming a teenager now, that she hesitated to make friends with the children who would not grow up for a long time.

'I thought we agreed not to have any more children?', Maurice said, sitting up. When the children were busy with the homework, he and Brandi - as they often did now - had gone up into the bedroom for some marital fun.
Brandi decided that it was best not to reply. Sure, it would have been more reasonable not to have any more children and done no harm if the house became a bit quieter after Beau and Barry had moved to college. She should at least have discussed it with Maurice before attempting to get pregnant again. Actually, she had not expected that he would notice immediately.
Internally she smiled though. Not only could she hear in his voice that he wasn't angry with her, she felt that when he became aware what she attempted he did his best to fulfil her wish and had managed to do so successfully.

Brandi went downstairs to cook dinner, while Maurice remained in the bedroom for a few more minutes to make the bed and also to have a moment to think. Tidying the sheets he shook his head and laughed. How sneaky of her trying to get pregnant 'behind his back'. James had warned him a long time ago that Brandi was known for wanting a large family, but he really would have thought that six children were enough for her. He had no doubt that they brought a seventh on the way earlier. It may have not been what he wanted, but it did not horrify him either, so he was more amused by Brandi's attempt to fool him than angry.

When Joy was about to become a teenager, Brandi began to feel the first signs of a pregnancy. Neither her or Maurice were surprised.

Barry had decided to throw a big birthday party for his sister, although her age transition was taking place in midweek. Apart from Charlene and Dustin, he invited some of their teen friends. He had mainly chosen sims he did not expect to grow up soon and it was the reason why he picked Eleonor. His attraction to her had not been on his mind at that moment, but he was very pleased to see her when she arrived. He was careful not to flirt with her, but her eyes were spectacular and looking at them did not count as cheating.

Apart from the guests he had invited, Melody Tinker had come back with them after school and there was a large group in the living room when Joy got ready to blow out the candles.

'Hey, cool!', Joy thought after she had turned into a teen. Brandi read the expression on her daughter's face and wondered how much more pleased she would be after a glance into the mirror. Joy was very beautiful.
Her childhood had been full of fun and play, activities that suited her character and Joy had not felt a strong need to grow up. Now that it happened, she saw the new opportunities.

After pondering for a short moment, she turned round and started to talk to Armando, who had become a good friend of both her brothers, although he had moved to the neighbourhood only later. Barry didn't know but believed him to be younger than them.

Then Joy walked up to another one of her guests and starting to dance with him, she asked: 'So? What do you think now?'
Armando didn't know what this was about, but if the question concerned the looks of Joy, he surely knew the right answer.

Barry, who had watched his sister closely when he was planning the party, had invited Randy although until a few days ago he had not really known anyone from the family.
As usual, Joy and her brothers had brought some children along with them when they returned from school, but even if she played with them for a short time, Joy was aware that they were much younger than her and it did not seem to make sense to try to be friends with them.

With only a few days until her birthday she felt closer to her future age group and when Randy happened to walk along in the evening of that day, she greeted him and started to talk.
Joy was good at talking and she tried hard not to sound childish, but Randy did not look impressed.

When she complained that he did not take her serious, he shrugged and said: 'What do you want from me? You're a child, you expect me to treat you like a girl of my age?'

He was mocking her the whole evening and reminded her several times that she was only a small girl, but Randy must have liked her well enough, because he stayed for some hours after Joy had invited him in.
'You wait and see', she said before he left, 'in a few days when I grow up you think different about me'.

Joy could not know how true this was. Randy obviously fancied her.

Everyone was dancing in the living room and they were having a great time. The birthday party looked like it was going to be a great success.

But then, as unexpected as during Beau's birthday party, the atmosphere changed, mainly when Joy, who had spend almost the entire evening dancing with Randy, turned to Armando and began a conversation with him. When Randy heard her appreciating Armando he disappeared from the living room and looking for him later, Joy found him sitting on his own in the kitchen.
'What's up?', she asked. 'Are you alright?'
'Yes, great, nothing wrong with me', he answered with a voice which clearly indicated that this was not so.

Joy did not give up and after pressing him about it, he admitted that he had hoped that she would like him a bit better than the others, but seeing her with Armando had convinced him that she was just friendly to everyone. Joy did like him better, especially after he had said that, but she wanted to wait until some more of her friends had grown up before thinking about love.
Despite her intentions, by the time her party was over she had a heavy crush on Randy.

So the party was a success after all and Barry had reason to be proud of himself.

With such a romantic ending for Joy it was the greatest birthday party she could imagine.

She went into the living room and thanked Barry for arranging everything so well.

Then she hugged Beau, although he had not participated in the organisation of the party.
'The only thing that makes me sad today, is that you will be leaving soon. I can not imagine what it will be like without my big brother.'
Dustin and Charlene

The next morning, after staying in her father's house for the night, Charlene crossed the street and walked into her and Dustin's new home. After Nina and Matthew had moved out, the property (with the building demolished) remained unoccupied and it is quite possible that the Laytons and Brandi in particular had been involved in keeping it that way. However it may be, Dustin and Charlene were now living right opposite to them.

First it was a shock to Charlene when she looked around. The house was very nice and since they had saved up a large amount of money when they were at university it was spacious too.
But it looked like a lot of work needed to be done.

A short time later Dustin arrived. Charlene prepared him for the emptiness inside the house and the labour it would require to furnish it.

It went a lot qicker than they expected and once everything was painted and the floors laid, the house was ready to live in. They had brought some furniture with them and the rest arrived in vans later on.

So only a few days later everything was done and they decided it was time for their own styling.
As soon as she got out of the taxi Charlene was irritated by the sight of her father apparently flirting with one of the neighbours.

It did not go any further and Charlene convinced herself that her father wasn't serious, especially since according to Ben Jenkins his father and Marisa were the happiest couple you could imagine. Like some of the others of their group she became aware though, how the changed atmosphere had affected the entire neighbourhood.
She guessed that - like her - none of the neighbours would have wanted to be without this greater spontaneity and autonomy anymore. At the same time sims had always been at a risk to fall in love unexpectedly and occasionally without wanting it and she feared that even if her father and Marisa weren't serious they probably did not foresee the consequences.

She went inside where Dustin was already trying on new clothes.

After they had both picked a few things and were ready to leave, Charlene lept into Dustin's arms and hugged him. She felt that it only fully dawned on her now that this was the start of their life together. Living with each other on the campus had always been preliminary, a preparation.

Back home they were making love when some neighbours arrived to welcome them in their new house. They risked their visitors leaving, not really wanting to let go of each other. Charlene's greatest wish had been fulfilled a long time ago when she became the most popular girl in the neighbourhood, but this was the life she had dreamed of since she and Dustin got together.
Dustin felt pretty much the same. They had only just graduated and he was already so close to have everything he ever wanted.

'Maybe we should get dressed and answer the door?', Dustin said afterwards. Charlene nodded although she did not feel ready to socialise with others yet. She could have sat like this for hours just looking into his eyes, aware to be in the company of the sim that meant more to her than anybody else.

Outside they found Matthew Cox and Gretchen, who told them that she and Orlando were planning to get married soon.
Dustin not only liked talking to Charlene himself, he also liked to listen when she was talking to others. It fascinated him that she never failed to find a topic regardless whether she was dealing with friends or strangers.

The next day they invited Brandi and their younger siblings. Joy was going to grow up soon and Francis would probably follow her shortly. They had visited the family often, but as much as they would have liked it, it was impossible to socialise with everyone. They tried to remain close to the younger ones but there was never enough time. Before they knew it was evening and Brandi insisted that they'd go home, Joy in particular, since she had not done her homework yet.

Dustin would have liked to start his athletics career straight away, but he wanted to make it on his own without Maurice pulling strings for him and it took both of them some time to find a job. The house looked more expensive than it had been and they still had plenty of money left. For Dustin it was more a matter of wanting to fulfil his life dream.
With this exception everything was perfect. Everyday life was great. Dustin wondered if they alone felt that their relationship was unique. There were many couples, like his mother and Maurice, which were very happy too. Others noticed it too though, and everyone who knew them agreed that Dustin and Charlene had something special. They were two parts of a unit and most striking was probably how even among a group of sims they always remained a 'we', signalling with glances and gestures the connection with the other. It had been like this since they were teens and there was no reason to believe that it would ever change.

They used the free time to practise the skills which they would need in their future careers. Dustin was a firm teacher and he expected Charlene to concentrate on the task, but he was also very patient and always there when she asked for his help.

In those days Charlene often felt the urge to leap into his arms. They were planning to get married and start a family, but they were in no hurry.

One evening they went on a date, this time choosing the Diner instead of the Hub. At the moment neither of them felt the need for other company.
They had just graduated and this was exactly the type of good life they wanted presently. They recalled the time when they were teens and realised that even then they had not been so carefree. There would be new duties and responsibilities eventually, but at the moment it was like a holiday despite being back in their hometown.

Soon after they both started working and not long after that Charlene suddenly felt very sick and nearly threw up when she practised on the surgery machine one evening.

Shortly before they had been invited over for Joy's birthday party. Although the first life stages of a sim lasted only a short period of time it was still unbelievable that Joy was already a teenager and it reminded Dustin that Beau would not remain such for much longer. His two oldest brothers had always been particularly close to his heart because he had taken such a large part in their upbringing.
Now that she was older Joy began to look more like Brandi and although they had the same eyes there was not much resemblance between her and Charlene.

The sickness continued and Charlene had to run for the bathroom as soon as she got home from work the next day.

Soon Charlene began to suspect that she was pregnant. Their plan for the next future had differed and she had encouraged Dustin to advance in his career before they would think about family. They agreed that once there were children in the house they would never experience the same freedom again.
But they had not been very careful either and maybe a less concious wish had been to start a family now.

'It's not what we planned but there is no reason to wait with the wedding now', Dustin suggested one evening.
'And then, finally, you will be all mine.'
'I'm yours already', he replied.
Apart from her pregnancy (for which he was very much responsible) Dustin was thinking about Beau, who would go to college soon. He hated the idea that Beau may not be able to attend the wedding. They agreed that they would arrange for it to take place as soon as possible.

When they were invited to Orlando's wedding they had already picked the dress for their own and they were in a very romantic mood.
'Hello!? This is my wedding not yours and I am ready to get started if you don't mind', Gretchen reminded them.
Dustin laughed. 'Sorry, we were getting carried away. Go ahead we follow you.'

He did not stick to his promise though and they nearly missed the beginning of the ceremony.

Charlene stood behind his chair and when Orlando and Gretchen exchanged the vows she put her hands on his shoulders and smiled at him.
The wedding party was great apart from the jealous scene that resulted from Dirk flirting with Lauren. Charlene also observed that Gretchen was reaching for her belly a few times during the wedding and recognising the gesture she believed that Orlando and Gretchen had reason to hurry with the marriage as well.
They had enjoyed meeting all their friends but Charlene was glad when the party was over. She tired very quickly these days.

Then it was the day of their own wedding. While Dustin put on his suit he became very thoughtful. It wasn't doubt, rather he had problems to believe that something he had wanted for such a long time would come true today. He remembered one afternoon when he and Charlene had met in the park, still teenagers at that time. Later he told Dirk that he believed Charlene to be the love of his life. He had known then. How different his life - and that of his family - would have been if she and her father had never come to this town.

When he followed her outside to greet the family which had arrived by then, a smile was already back on his face. They were the only guests, because they were a large enough party on their own. Despite the complications and confusion that had resulted from their unusual family situation, he loved his clan with its strong relationship ties. They were the most important sims in the world for him. Even if they did not have the wealth and reputation of a family like the Goths, as far as he was concerned his was the best Pleasantview had.

He and Charlene were very impressed with Joy. It seemed to them that after age transition it still took a few days before the new features consolidated. Joy had such a natural beauty that it would have only been spoiled by make-up.

After greeting Joy, Charlene turned to her father and gave him a warm hug. She still did not understand why he had reacted so strange after her and Dustin's engagement, but she was glad that their relationship had not suffered a lasting damage and was as good as before now. She wondered how he would react if he found out that he was going to become a grandfather. Neither him nor Brandi appeared old enough for it. Dustin and Charlene had decided not to tell the family yet. They would find out soon enough, because it was only a matter of days before it would show on Charlene.

'Hi there', Charlene walked up to their younger brothers and played with them for a moment, before she went out into the garden to join Dustin who was getting impatient to begin with the wedding.

Greeting and talking to each family member a bit most of the afternoon had passed, but eventually everyone was seated and they could start with the ceremony.

Charlene had chosen a plain but very elegant wedding dress and with her fine features she was the most beautiful sim in the world. It was impossible for Dustin to imagine anyone else by his side. In the beginning, following the death of his father, being a teenager had not been easy, but from the moment he met her his life had taken a turn for the better. He was convinced that without her he would have never felt so satisfied and fulfilled as he did now. It seemed so natural that she was there and shared his thoughts and dreams.

They both had prepared a small speech, but words weren't really necessary. The promises were all in their eyes. Dustin had never even kissed another girl apart from her, but it did not bother him in the least if it was to stay that way for the rest of his life. Charlene never doubted that she had gotten the greatest guy in the neighbourhood. Already when they were teens he had appeared more mature to her than the others of their generation. He was very fit, but it was his mental strength she admired most, a confidence in himself that he could fall back on and which enabled him to be easygoing and relaxed about things. She had the same trust in him and felt that nothing would ever go wrong as long as they were together.

After they exchanged the rings they remained frozen for a second before they could break the spell for a long romantic kiss. The family was already turning away to go inside when Dustin and Charlene realised that they were married at last.

Only Brandi and Maurice were still in the garden and the young couple used the chance to talk to their parents. Dustin knew that it was a big moment for his mother. If she had thought that he made the wrong choice she would have shown it, but there was no risk of that happening with Charlene.
Charlene thought that their life could become very complicated if their parents ever fell out, but fortunately her father was visibly happy with Brandi (despite his encounter with Marisa, which she had observed shortly after their return to Pleasantview) and actually looked at her admiringly throughout the evening.

Dustin and Charlene had been so much a couple already that they had not expected it to make much difference that they were married. But they had the most wonderful day of their life. They were glad that they had decided on an early wedding now, even if the initial reason had been Charlene's pregnancy.

After they cut the wedding cake, Francis and Philip came into the kitchen to grab a plate and they all sat down at the table. Dustin had hurried them on earlier, because he had worried that it would become too late for the younger ones, but Brandi understood that this was a special occasion and they were allowed to stay until the party was over.

It was great to have the entire family around and they did not miss their friends. Everyone had a good time and enjoyed the party.

Due to all the excitement Charlene had not felt the exhaustion until the end, but by that time the limousine arrived to take them on their honeymoon ride from which she returned completely refreshed.

'Oops! Don't drop me, we only just got married!', Charlene laughed while she was clinging to Dustin to avoid falling off the sofa. After they got out of the car, Dustin could not get into the house quick enough and they did not get further than the living room.

Afterwards he told Charlene that he would love it if she put her wedding dress back on, although it was late and they would not stay up much longer. Since they loved dancing with each other they ended their wedding day this way. Charlene realised that there were no words to adequately describe how she felt for Dustin and what he meant for her, but from the moment they met it was like a little arrow had pointed to him and told her that he was the right one.

When Dustin got up the next morning, he thought that if Charlene had not been pregnant already she surely would have been after their wedding night.

The next days they celebrated their honeymoon, which was only interrupted by Charlene throwing up occasionally.

Dustin felt very sorry for her, but it was hard to be truly sympathetic while he was in such an elevated mood himself.
He and Charlene were both a bit surprised that the pregnancy still wasn't showing. Charlene in particular wished that this period of constant sickness would finally be over.

If he was feeling too good to adequately sympathise with her suffering, Dustin wanted to make her comfortable at least and he was very concerned and caring.

Charlene's pregnancy had progressed very slowly - which was unusual but happened in some cases - and they were beginning to wonder if they had been mistaken, but then a belly began to show on her and they knew that they were in fact going to be parents.
Because of the experience he had gained trough his brothers Dustin knew how to deal with small children and the way he cared for them, Charlene was sure that he would be full of love for his own.

After her pregnancy had become visible Charlene was growing big quick and Dustin was in awe when he touched her belly. He loved the idea to become father of a daughter who looked just like Charlene, while she wished to have a son that would show a likeness to Dustin, though in the end it did not matter much.
Whether a boy or a girl, it would have another aunt or uncle. Shortly after their wedding it turned out that Brandi was pregnant again and would give birth shortly before Charlene. Dustin had already suspected something like this when he talked to his mother during the wedding party. He recognised the expression on her face and had noticed the special attention Maurice paid to her. His mother in turn had immediately guessed that Charlene was pregnant, even if he had not given her a clear answer when she inquired about it.
The Broke Family pt. 8

Beau had expected to be at college already when Charlene and Dustin got married, but they surprised the whole family with an early wedding.

Brandi was glad for it. She knew that it was only a matter of days before she would not fit into an ordinary formal dress anymore.

Joy looked really sweet in her dress and Charlene complimented her little sister.

It was a very romantic wedding and Brandi shed a few tears during the ceremony. She was hoping that her other children would find true love in their spouse one day, as those two had done.
Afterwards she couldn't help asking Dustin though, whether there was another reason why they were getting married so quickly and Dustin smiled at her question in a way that was answer enough.

Maurice never said a word about not being included in the decision making and when Brandi's pregnancy became visible, he was as caring as before.

Even if she pretended that she found his behaviour ridiculous, his comic routine in the bathtub could still make her laugh. Joy was the only one in the family who could do it as well as her father.

Brandi's pregnancy (which they had not talked about until it showed) was still not the last event before Beau moved to college. The life of their two teenage boys had been very happy, but Brandi noticed that Barry suddenly stayed at home with the family more and that she also had not seen Melanie for some days.

Following Joy's birthday, one after the other of her age group became a teenager, but it was also time for some other children to make the step into the next stage of their life. When Jean was ready to turn into a toddler the Simmon girls invited a lot of friends over, using the occasion to have a party for Louise, who they expected to leave soon.
Eleonor was there too, but that afternoon Lisa posed the bigger temptation and maybe Melanie had already sensed danger when they arrived.

First they all had a lot of fun and cheered Jean into her new life stage. He talked a bit to Louise, who intentionally had not invited Beau, because she finally wanted to get to know his brother better.
Barry later asked himself what temporary insanity had led him to flirt with Lisa (or accept her caress) while Melanie was around. Louise looked surprised too and he felt that she had invited Melanie to avoid a scene like that.

When he looked at her face, he realised how much he had hurt her with his innocent flirt. He had just not taken into consideration how serious family sims were taking those kind of things.

First she looked like she was going to cry, but then he could see her arm swinging into his direction and she slapped him, without saying a word.

Barry did not get angry with her for hitting him. He felt guilty and more than anything sad. He had not wanted to hurt Melanie and he definitely did not want to break up with her. Had he seriously wished to start a relationship with Lisa or with Eleonor, this would have been the chance. But he could only think about Melanie and how he could bring her to forgive him.
Maybe he had not really cheated on her (not like Alice Simmon and Patrick Bendett, who could not say that anymore when the day ended), but to flirt with another girl in front of your girlfriend was not a nice thing to do.

Melanie did not look like she enjoyed being angry with him and after some apologising from his side, she said that she was sorry for hitting him. For most of the afternoon she stayed away from him though and they did not talk much.

After thinking about it all evening and the night, Barry got up before dawn and drove to Bluewater. Melanie was still in her pyjamas when she came outside to greet him.
He told her that he had not slept all night and how terrible he felt about them falling out with each other.

They could not talk for long because Melanie had to get ready for school, but before he left she pulled him towards her and kissed him, which filled him with hope.
'Is it alright if I come over again in the afternoon?', he asked.

When he visited her again in the afternoon, they sat on the pavement and talked for a long time. Every little improvement in their relationship filled him with immense relief. He had not even known himself how much he cared for Melanie until this happened.
He understood that Melanie's jealousy was partially due to the fact that she worried what would become of them when they were at college and he had to admit that up to then he had sometimes wondered if the cards would be mixed anew when they went there. The fear of loosing Melanie did a lot to change his opinion in that regard.

Their friendship was almost repaired, but Melanie looked very sad when he said goodbye to her in the evening and Barry knew that he still had some way to go.

The next days he stayed at home, but then he kept thinking about Melanie all the time and he was afraid that she might decide to end their relationship after all.
He almost expected her to refuse when he invited her on a date and he was glad that she not only accepted his invitation but actually turned up (that she would not had been his next fear).

In the club he quickly changed from his school uniform into his normal clothes and then joined her on the dancefloor. He did his best to be interesting and charming and his efforts convinced Melanie that he was serious about her.

When Barry was sure that Melanie was not so angry with him anymore he dared to be more forward and he flirted with her suggestively.

Step by step their former bond was tied again. Barry had never known how grateful you could be for being allowed to dance with a girl and holding her tight.

'I'm so glad you didn't break up with me. I love you so much', he said and hugged her.

After relaxing in the hot tub for a short time they ended the date and said goodbye to each other.

A few days later Melanie called and invited him over and when they were in her parents' bedroom she proved that she had forgiven him completely.

Meanwhile Brandi's pregnancy progressed and she was on maternity leave.

Maurice told her that she had never looked more beautiful and he meant it.

'You know, it's strange. I really thought it would not be a good idea, but I am extremly happy that we are going to have another child', he said to her one day.
'I'm glad you say that', Brandi replied and smiled.
Maurice felt that she had wanted this pregnancy very much. She looked so content and satisfied and it was one of the reasons why he was looking forward to the child so much now.

They were cuddling on the sofa when Beau returned from school. It was Friday and a big day for him, because he was finally leaving for university.

He told his mother that he regretted that he would not be there when the baby was born and Barry had to turn away, because for him it was probably the hardest to see Beau leave. He loved his other siblings, but Beau had always been by his side, they had been children together and teens. He could not imagine what it would be like without him.

He and Joy had already said goodbye to Beau the night before, so there was mainly one sim that Beau had to see one last time before he left and that of course was Louise. There was no disagreement with regard to them living together and they had already picked the dormer, but he still wasn't sure how long he would have to wait for her. The worst case scenario was that he would be a whole semester ahead of her.

But towards her he was cheerful and optimistic. 'We will not be separated for long. I am sure we will see each other again in less than a week.'

He stayed outside with Louise until Francis and Philip returned from school and then he said goodbye to his younger brothers.

He hoped that he would keep up the good relationship with them, especially with Francis. He was a wonderful child and everyone loved him, but it had always been harder to remain close to him.

Louise had not seen Joy since she became a teen and Beau introduced her to his sister. The children often had their own friends over and did not use to take much notice of the older ones around, so Louise hardly knew her.

Then Beau disappeared with Louise into the gardenhouse 'to pack a few last things'. After their woohoo he would have liked to hold her a lot longer, but it was getting late.

'I see you in a few days, don't worry', Beau said when they were dressed again and Louise was about to leave.
'Yes, we will', Louise replied with a smile.

But the expression on her face when Beau could not see it anymore betrayed how sad she really was. Even if she had to wait a week it sounded like an awful long time. It wasn't only the separation, during this period they would belong to different age groups, a thought she didn't like at all.

After Louise had left, Beau called the taxi and then said goodbye to the family again. He was sad that he and Barry could not go to college at the same time and was hoping that apart from Louise, his brother would also follow him shortly. It was possible since aging did not follow strict rules and depended on other factors apart from the passing of time.

He was walking towards the taxi when Brandi came storming out of the house.
'What do you think you're doing? You didn't think of going without me?', she shouted, running after him.
Beau only grinned. His mother would never forgive him if he would not let her come to the campus with him, but he was also glad that she would be there for his age transition. They both got into the taxi and left for college, where a new chapter of Beau's life would start.

A few days later Brandi went downtown to distract herself for a few hours. Marlon could really relate to her happiness about the pregnancy.

He told her about his own children, two sons. Brandi thought that it was impossible not to like Marlon. Earlier on she had watched him with Kaylynn and she looked very happy to see him too. He had not lived in their neighbourhood that long, but had already become friends with many of them. His children would not be much older than the one growing inside her and she could imagine them becoming friends one day. So many sims had come to this area since she had been a single mother and pregnant with Barry, but Brandi had the impression that it was a tighter knit network now than it had been at that time. They were all linked by the relationships between the family members of all ages.

In the evening of that day something strange happened, or rather it was strange that Francis chose to let it happen on such a very ordinary and unspectacular evening. Maurice was sitting in the living room with him and Philip and the two boys were doing their homework.
When Francis was finished, he put down his notebook, looked at his father and said: 'I want to grow up now.'
Maurice looked at him with astonishment and asked if he would not want them to arrange a birthday party and invite his friends and relatives.
'No. I want to grow up now.'

Brandi got an ice cake out of the freezer and the family assembled in the living room. They did not really understand why Francis was in such a hurry and had picked this moment out of all, but they recalled that he had turned into a schoolchild in the bathroom, so maybe it was just his style to be spontaneous about his age transitions.
The family accepted his decision and they tried their best to turn it into something he would like to remember, despite the lack of preparation.

The well known coloured sparkles began circling around Francis and then he swirled while the family cheered him into his teenage life.

Francis looked at his body. He was unable to explain why exactly he had wanted to grow up all of a sudden. He simply had known that it was the right time, that he was ready. Maybe Joy's age transition played a part in it. He was close to Philip, but he belonged more to her generation, that was how it had always felt to him.

Whatever, being a teenager was as great as he imagined it to be.

He grabbed a piece of cake while he began to consider the new options he had now. His aspiration had been swinging towards popularity, but had turned into romance in the end.

Then it occured to him that there were more important matters to attend to and he put the plate on the table and went to check what other clothes were available and to get rid of the hair that was hanging into his face and annoyed him.

When he returned into the dining room, Joy gave him a close inspection.
'It's not only the haircut. I didn't expect it, but you look a lot like Barry.'

Later Barry congratulated him on growing up well. 'You look really good, brother.'
'No wonder that you think that', Francis replied, 'Joy said I look like you'.

'Don't worry, there will be a small child in the family again soon enough', Maurice said to Brandi when they were alone.
Brandi tried to smile, but she was aware that there would come a point when they would all grow up and start their own life.

On the other hand the first grandchild was already on the way and she had Maurice by her side. Life was really rather good.

The next evening they went downtown again to get some clothes for Francis (and the mobile phone that teenagers considered absolutely necessary these days). When he checked himself out in the mirror afterwards, he was very convinced of himself.

It was a Saturday morning in autumn and Maurice and Brandi were in their bedroom. Maurice was longing for her, but she was so close to give birth - although it did not show - that they did not dare to woohoo anymore.
He had never told her about his encounter with Marisa Bendett shortly after Charlene and Dustin had returned to Pleasantview and the truth was that he did not think about it either. He had realised how much this harmless flirt without serious intentions had stirred his emotions. Maurice was easygoing but not weak. That it was not serious would not matter much to Brandi if she ever caught or heard about him cheating and he would not risk to trouble his family life for a meaningless affair. He was determined to remain faithful, which was not that difficult because he had everything he needed. He had fulfilled his life dream to become Hall of Famer, he had fulfilled his second biggest dream to have a large circle of friends and he had a lively home and the parties and family reunions of his clan.

Before he could reflect anymore on it, another sim was making its way into the family.
'It's a girl', Maurice informed Philip, who was the first to welcome the baby.

The other children followed and they all greeted their sister, who was named Annie.

Even the gardener came up to have a look at her.

When Barry came closer to welcome Annie into the family, he and his mother exchanged a long glance. They did not need to speak, Barry knew what his mother was thinking. She was happy about the baby of course (and that it was another girl among the five boys), but with each day of Annie growing up, so would he, and this was very much on Brandi's mind too.

When all the other family members had said hello to Annie, Brandi passed her on to Maurice. The way he handled their children was probably what she loved most about him. It looked like the easiest thing in the world to bring them up and like Charlene, Joy and Francis were seeing him as a friend as well as a father now. It would be the same when Philip was old enough.

Since he had grown up, Francis had often wondered how he would think about Amy now and one day he called her and asked if she would like to meet him downtown. Amy was a close friend, but he had not known what to expect. Although he had no experience and no comparison, when he saw her he knew immediately that he would not easily find another girl he liked so much. Amy seemed to think likewise. She told him that she really liked black hair and her smile indicated that she liked the rest of him as well.

Amy was always up for fun and they had a great time together. Francis had not played pool before and he tried to concentrate on it, but her sight distracted him quite a bit. It was really a very short dress she was wearing.

They tried to order at the restaurant, but all the tables were taken - this the maitre d' insisted on even if it wasn't true - and so they began to flirt with each other instead.
'You know Amy, I wanted to tell you the whole day how beautiful you are'. Francis was a very outgoing sim and not frightened to try charming.
'Oh really?'

Jennifer could not stop herself from having a quick check on her youngest daughter, but tried to stay in the background and be seen as little as possible. Although Francis had not invited Amy on a date, Jennifer had already expected that the day would not pass without some romance. She saw no reason for concern though, because her daughter and Francis seemed to genuinely like each other.

Francis had seen his day out with Amy as a test, knowing that they still would have a good time if they turned out not to be romantically interested in each other. He thought that he had considered all possible outcomes, fancying her, not fancying her, but he was not prepared for liking her so much.
Since they had been friends when they were children, he already knew that he liked the way she was, now he found out that he really liked the way she looked too.

Actually Francis thought that Amy came so close to being perfect that he began to wonder why he had turned into a romance sim. At the moment he could not see the point in dating other girls while she was around.
It was getting late and Jennifer left her position as observer and indicated to Amy that she should say goodbye to Francis. Francis promised her that he would invite her on a date soon (hoping her mother would not always be around) and then went home too.

A few days later Joy had a friend over as well. She had been invited to Christopher's birthday party and had asked him to come and see her one of these days. She liked Christopher a lot, but thought that there were other teens living in the neighbourhood, who were more appealing than he was. He was one of her best friends and she hoped to get all of them together, Amy, Rose, Dyson.. It would be great if they would become one big group.

Her thoughts were interrupted when they came closer until they had their arms around each other. Suddenly she was beginning to see a lot more in Christopher. He was cute really and so nice. And did it really matter that he was a family sim?

Nobody has found an explanation yet, why none of the older ones warn their younger brothers and sisters about the risk of falling in love with your best friends when you are a teen. There is no doubt that they keep it a secret, because in this generation - like it happened so many times in previous ones - Joy and Christopher (as well as Amy and Francis) reacted with the same confusion and disbelief.

Brandi and Maurice encouraged their children to go out and meet with friends. They did not really need their support in bringing up Annie, and Brandi in particular wanted to spend as much time with her as possible.

She accepted that Annie was to be her last child, although Maurice felt the need to inquire if she had any intentions of getting pregnant again before they woohoo'd the next time.

Barry, who knew that he did not have much time left to get to know his sister, was the one who spent most time with her apart from her parents.

This was also due to the fact that he was staying at home more now and trained his skills like the others who were close to going to college.
His relationship with Melanie was as good, maybe better, than it had been before falling out though, even if they weren't seeing each other often.

A short time ago the news of Beau's and Louise's engagement had reached them. Nobody had expected anything else, they had already talked about it before growing up, but Barry wondered if his relationship with Melanie would develop in a similar way. Beau had told them that he and Louise were going to stay in the dormer for the time being, which was very small anyway, and Barry and Melanie were planning to move into the two remaining rooms. They were occupied at the moment, but the students who lived there belonged to a secret society and said that they could arrange to swap rooms on short notice.
Barry was glad that he and Beau would live in the same house again. It was still strange to him that his brother was not around anymore.

When it was time to leave, Barry started his round of goodbyes with Annie and Maurice. Although Barry remembered the time when they were alone with his mother and Dustin, it seemed an awful long time ago. As the father of their brothers and sisters, he and Beau were seeing Maurice the same way.

Then he went upstairs, where Brandi was getting ready to take him to university.
'I know you would have liked us all to become family sims, but although we didn't, I think we have learned a lot from you in that respect. Even when we were poor, we were a great family.'

Next came his brother Francis. 'I guess you do look a bit like me and to add to it, I heard that you fancy a Stratton girl as well. Amy told Melanie that you had a lot of fun in town the other day.'
Francis was visibly pleased to hear that Amy had enjoyed their outing. He regretted that Barry and Melanie would not be further available to pass on valuable information like that. He was not so sad to see him leaving though, not because he would not miss him, but because he understood that Barry was ready to grow up and full of anticipation.

He expected that Barry and Beau would come over to visit them anyway, and so he and Barry parted with a short hug and a kiss.

Saying goodbye to Joy was more emotional. He was as fond of Francis as of her, but - like Beau - she was special to him for being (until recently) his only sister. Brandi had gotten dressed and was already waiting for him.

But Barry could not leave without saying goodbye to Philip of course. He had invited a friend and they were inside playing chess.
'What's up with you Philip? Don't you want to say goodbye to me?'

Philip ended the game and jumped up to hug his brother. Everyone in the neighbourhood anticipated that many of the children would grow up in winter and when this happened Philip would be among them. Barry had no doubt that he would turn into a family sim as a teen.
After he said goodbye to him he went back outside to his mother, who had called a taxi in the meantime, and they drove to college.
Dustin and Charlene pt. 2

Charlene had to admit that while she was looking forward to see her best friends, it was also curiousity that caused her to invite Lilith, Ben and Lauren together. To everyone's astonishment Lilith had been the first of their group who got pregnant and that Ben was the father was almost equally surprising. Charlene had guessed that something was going on between him and Lilith, but had still expected that he and Lauren would remain a couple and get married eventually. Shortly after the scene at Orlando's wedding he had started to live with Lilith though, and they had recently become parents of twins. From what she gathered there had been plans that he would return to Lauren after the child was born, but being pregnant herself, Charlene doubted if this was going to happen. Apart from the fact that there were two babies instead of one, she imagined that Ben was not very different from Dustin, who cared very much about their baby although it wasn't even born yet.

Being equally fond of Lauren, Lilith and Ben she wanted to find out how they were feeling about each other and the best way to do this was to invite them all.
In the beginning everything went well, she talked a bit to each of them and they had a pleasant afternoon. But suddenly, while she had a conversation with Ben, he came closer and Charlene realised that he was about to kiss her.
'Ben! What's up with you?! You want us to remain friends don't you?' Charlene was surprised and a little bit angry with him. She was convinced that he had not intended the kiss to be more than a gesture between friends, but he above all people should have known about the risk of such behaviour. Her surprise stemmed from the fact that Ben must have been aware that she would reject even such an innocent gesture, being completely faithful to Dustin, and she could not understand why he had tried it in the first place.

Since it was all rather harmless Charlene was going to leave it at that, but Ben had not received the last lesson yet. A moment later Lauren was by their side and she was furious. It had been rather obvious that Lauren still loved him and Charlene could not quite understand why she reacted so strongly. It was as unjustified as his jealousy at Orlando's wedding party when she was the victim.
As she watched, she got the impression that Ben had intentionally provoked this scene though. He acted surprised and it appeared a very stupid idea to her, but maybe he was gaining something from this experience that she could not see.

It was all very strange and in the end Charlene decided to join Lilith, who had remained completely calm throughout, at the bubble blower.

When she calmed down, Lauren tried to be cheerful and pretended that everything was alright. She congratulated her on her pregnancy and inquired when the baby was due.

But her temper rose again and eventually she had another go at Ben.

It all ended with tears and Charlene, who had been on her way into the kitchen, turned back to cheer Ben up and get between her two friends and their argument. She had not intended to cause trouble when she invited them.

While she was talking to Ben, Charlene could see how Lauren was looking at him and it made her wonder about her friend even more. Despite being upset and angry, it was clearly visible that she still had a lot of feeling for Ben and yet the way she was acting, she was about to destroy the last chance of getting back together with him.
At this point Charlene would have said goodbye to her friends, but Dustin had returned from work and he would have been disappointed to see them leaving before he could talk to them. Lilith had not seen Lauren's second outburst because she was having a conversation with him inside the house.

Lilith left soon after, apologising for her early departure with tiredness. 'You must be,' Charlene said, 'you have only given birth to two babies and I'm sure you don't get much sleep at the moment.'
Although Lilith agreed, there was something in the way she looked which convinced Charlene that this was not the whole explanation. Charlene responded with an inquiring glance from her side and Lilith admitted that she believed to be pregnant again.
Charlene wondered if Lauren knew about it. It would be more comprehensible why she got so upset if she did. She had to be aware that if Lilith and Ben had three children, the chance that he would return to her was very slim.
'You sure didn't waste time', she thought when she watched Ben playing chess with Dustin. She believed their friend would find his happiness eventually, but he had chosen a complicated path.

Charlene had a very relaxed attitude about her own pregnancy. Although they would have preferred to wait a bit longer, they had already decided that they wanted children and Dustin was very happy about it. Since many of their friends were in a similar situation, she could foresee them all growing into a big community, with their children becoming friends as well and she liked this idea.

Charlene had gone shopping in town and was waiting for the taxi to go home. Brandi had given birth to a daughter a short time ago and it meant that they would not have to wait much longer.
She got tired quickly and needed to eat a lot more, but apart from that she did not suffer much discomfort. Since Charlene was on 'platinum' (an expression that was coined to describe those sims who - like Charlene - had their biggest dream fulfilled and had thereby achieved a state of constant satisfaction, which kept their mood up even if they were exhausted and their motives drained), she could safely use all the equipment to guarantee her well-being, like the energizer and although she did not want to depend on it, the occasional boosts had helped her a lot. Charlene thought that the fact, that many of these fantastic inventions were only available to the sims who needed them least was a bit unfair and that a lot of scientific research was still required, but she was glad for herself.

Dustin got promoted and was in a great mood when he returned in the afternoon. It was another step towards the fulfilment of his life dream. A dream life he had already. He and Charlene had both started with good jobs and were climbing the career ladder fast. They had a nice house, a loving family and they were going to have a baby soon.

But none of this mattered as much as being together.
'I was out to the shops today and thought about Brandi and our little sister. I think our baby might come tonight.'
'You know it's strange. I was thinking about it when I came home this afternoon. How do you feel?'
'Very well. I was tired when I came home, but I used the energizer earlier, I felt it might be useful if my premonition is right.'

'If we are both feeling this way, we should have a quiet evening', Dustin said.

Their intuition did not betray them although it still took some hours before it happened. It was late into the night and Dustin was reading a book, with Charlene lying next to him, her head resting on his thigh. But suddenly she got up and groaned.
Although Dustin had been there when Brandi had given birth to his brothers Barry and Beau, it had not prepared him for seeing Charlene doing the same. He was very worried that something might go wrong, even if this was very unlikely (so much in fact that it had never happened in their neighbourhood).

It was an untimely moment but it also occurred to him how lovely she was. Whether a boy or a girl, the child that was finding its way into this world right now was destined to become a wonderful creature if it got anything from its mother.

Soon his fears returned though and when the birth was over and Charlene was holding their child, Dustin was almost more exhausted than her and had to rest on the sofa for a minute.

It did not keep him there for long because he was too eager to have a close look at his son, who Charlene was holding in her arm with a happy smile on her face.

'Oh Charlene, isn't he cute?!', Dustin said. Charlene turned her head and looked at him, still smiling. In their generation, none of the females - with the exception of Gretchen maybe - were very motherly types and Dustin did not expect (or want) Charlene to become such. He could see how proud and happy she was though.

She had every reason for it, because even from a more neutral perspective than theirs, Dennis - which was the name they had chosen for their son - was indeed a very cute baby. Although he had only just been born, he looked wide awake and curious about the world around him.

She let him play and talk to the baby, but it had already dawned before Charlene finally handed Dennis to him and Dustin was allowed to hold him for the first time.
Being so content with her life, Charlene possessed a very important prerequisite for becoming a good mother. Their son was something else that she and Dustin shared now and she had fallen in love with him immediately.

'Hi there little baby', Dustin said and snuggled his son.

From the moment he held him for the first time, Dustin was lost. He could find another amazing feature in Dennis every time he looked at him.

'You are unbelievable, you know that?', he said to him, 'I think you and me will become very good friends.'

Dennis did not understand a word of course, but he was equally fond of the big guy who was holding him.

'I don't know if I should go to work, he is only a day old', Charlene said and gently stroked her baby son.
'Don't worry, you just fed him and he will sleep soon. It's only for a day. You know they are waiting for you to return to give you a promotion.'
It was true and the reason why Charlene had decided to return to work so soon. At the moment it did not look like a desirable prospect though and she would have much rather stayed at home with Dustin and the baby.

After Charlene had left, Dustin put Dennis in his crib where he fell asleep immediately. Then he called Beau and invited him over.
'Don't laugh. If you plan a crime well enough, you don't get caught. It's just a matter of precise thinking.'
'I'm laughing about your ideas. You should tell your future wife, I'm sure she will like to hear them.'
Dustin was referring to Louise and Beau's recent engagement to her. From what he had heard about her she was not the type for a criminal husband.

Later in the evening Brandi came over as well. They did not see each other as much as one would have expected from being direct neighbours, but at the moment his mother was busy with her own baby and he knew how quickly a day passed in their house. Tonight she was keen to see her grandson though and after Annie had fallen asleep she crossed the road to visit her son and his family.

Her first impression was not the best though.
'Phew, Dustin! Don't you think you should have done this earlier?'
'Come on Mom, it always smells like that. Shall I tell you something? The way he is grinning, he looks like he is proud of this mess.'

When Dennis was fresh and clean again, he was presented to his grandmother.
'Dustin, he's wonderful! What a lively little guy he is, how intensely he is looking at me already. He's got the eyes of Charlene and his grandfather, but he still reminds me of you.'

Charlene arrived back home with the news of her promotion, but her first stop was the crib with her son in it, of whom she had thought about all day.

Without being aware of it Charlene shared a very similar attitude with her father and she did not see it as a great effort to deal with the baby, although she and Dustin were seldom able to sleep at the same time because Dennis was so active, and they had to take turns in looking after him.

Actually they had added another member to their family shortly after Dennis' birth.

When Charlene talked to Marlon, who had become a friend, one day, he told her that he and Angel were going to give away their kittens, which were old enough now. She and Dustin wanted pets and Charlene wanted a cat in particular, so she arranged to visit them one afternoon.
Marlon really liked to talk about children and wanted to know everything about her baby.

Afterwards he showed her their twins and Charlene picked up Arden, who was the only one awake. Marlon and Angel were both good looking sims and she thought that their son was really sweet. She wondered if he would grow as big as his father one day.

But she had come mainly for the the kittens and she went downstairs to have a look at them. Actually there was only one left, but she had the imression that she would have picked this one anyway. 'It's amazing', Marlon said, "I knew that Jerome would pick the other and I knew that you would like this one. Apparently it doesn't take long to find out who belongs to who.'
'You're right', Charlene replied, 'I felt this should be ours immediately.'
And that way Monty became a member of their family.

Another one followed only a few days later and this time Dustin was the one who picked it. He had met Matthew through the team and when he heard that they were going to give away their puppies he asked him if he could come over and see them.
'So what do you say? Do you want her?', Matthew asked.
'Yes, definitely. I think these terriers are great dogs, but this one is the cutest.'
'Fortunately I disagree', Florence said, 'or we would have to fight over it. But I think the one I have chosen is the best.'

'Of course you are the cutest. We also need another female in the house for balance, you are just right for us.'
And so Lulu was added to the household.

Dustin stayed on for a bit longer and while Lulu was playing with the others for a last time, he talked to Ben, who had gotten one of the dogs too.
Charlene had told him that Lilith believed to be pregnant again, so Dustin wasn't very surprised when he heard that she and Ben got engaged. Like most of their friends Dustin thought that Lauren was more attractive, but he could understand why Ben had fallen in love with Lilith. He had known her for a very long time and she was one of Charlene's and his closest friends. In his opinion she was a very special sim.

'It's really cold out there', Dustin said, 'I wonder what it will be like in winter. I brought Lulu inside. We have to watch her, so that we can take her out again when she needs to pee. How is our little treasure?'
'Happy I think. I just fed him. It's so strange that until recently none of the women thought about nursing their babies. It's so much better than feeding them bottles. He really enjoys it.'
'Yeah, I imagine.'

Monty and Lulu didn't care or probably weren't even aware that they belonged to different species and loved playing with each other.

There were a lot of creatures that needed to get snuggled these days, but Dustin and Charlene had some love to give to all of them and the pets got their share when Dennis was asleep.

Since they sometimes needed to sleep their friends were neglected a little, although Charlene tried to keep in contact with them.

'He loves you much more than me', Charlene said after putting down the phone.
'Oh come on, you know that isn't true. He always smiles when you pick him up.'

Dennis was probably a little bit fonder of his father, but there was in fact not much difference in his affection for his parents.

'You see? That's what I meant. He wants you to hold him now. He is greedy, he wants both of us', Dustin said as he passed Dennis on to Charlene.
'I can't believe that he is going to grow up soon.'

Dustin went into the kitchen to cook dinner and Charlene was nursing Dennis. The sickness came so sudden that she had to put him down on the floor to get into the bathroom in time.

They didn't know whether there was a special atmosphere in town at the moment because the amount of pregnancies topped every previous baby boom, but they had changed their original plan with regard to children too and although the initiative had come mainly from Dustin, Charlene was not against the idea to have another. They did not get the chance to make love often and they did not always try for a baby, but the night before Dustin had gotten very emotional and already when he suggested it, she had been rather sure they would succeed.

She was glad that Dustin was on holiday at the moment, because in the following days she often had to leave the care for Dennis to him.

'Those guys', she thought, smiling to herself, when she picked up the baby. She had believed Ben to be in a hurry (he and Lilith were married now and she had recently given birth to another set of twins), but it had not taken Dustin much longer before he started wishing for children.
It was not surprising with a mother like his and Charlene guessed that all the Brokes (even if their name was Layton) would have a strong family streak.
Her main reason - apart from the hope that Dustin could fulfil his life dream first - for not wanting children so early had been the dream that their home would become a place to meet with friends and keep them all connected. It was an idea that did not have to be altered much, because it was becoming increasingly likely that they would keep in contact through the children. In the meantime almost every one of their student friends had or was expecting a baby.

'I have to tell him', she thought. It was not unusual that Dustin looked after Dennis and he had not noticed that she had thrown up again.

While Dennis was asleep they sat down for a cup of coffee and Charlene informed Dustin about her sickness and that she believed she got pregnant when they had tried for a baby a short time ago. Dustin could not stop thinking about it all evening. They could wait until Dennis was a schoolchild but then they would have to enlarge the house. It was another incentive to advance in his career. Apart from those practical considerations he was simply happy. Charlene had assured him that she did not feel forced into this at all and explained that she had discovered with regard to herself as well as her friends that they did not have to change their attitude or become different sims just because they had children. They were all optimistic that they would bring up a generation which was more exciting than any other that ever existed in Pleasantview.

It wasn't even winter yet when they celebrated Dennis' first age transition. Charlene was looking forward to him becoming a toddler, at the same time she thought that sim children were growing up so fast in their early life stages that it was not surprising that many couples were opting for a large family. As babies and toddlers they required a lot of attention, but everyone knew that this was only for a short period. Most of them wished that it would last a bit longer.

Charlene turned her head towards him, just when Dennis landed in his arms again and it occurred to Dustin how much likeness there was between them.

When you looked closer Dennis showed a strong resemblance to his father though.

When Dustin put him down on the floor he immediately searched for his mother and when he found her he forcefully demanded to be picked up.

After she had cuddled and played with him a bit, Charlene began to teach her son to speak. Dustin watched them and noticed that her pregnancy was already beginning to show.
'I think I go to town for a short while, but only if you promise to wait until I come back. I want to be there when Dennis speaks his first word.'
Dustin was going to buy a few clothes for Dennis, but he also wanted to check if he found something nice for Charlene.

In the shop he met Lilith, who was searching for winter clothes for toddlers. Dustin had expected her to be completely exhausted, but if she was she didn't show it. Dustin thought that she was blooming and appeared very content. Her marriage was obviously going well.

Afterwards he talked to Aemon. Dustin had met Aemon and Katie when he was still at university and they had introduced him to some students who were members of the secret society and later helped him to get accepted there.
'I know its not your type of thing, but we really had a fantastic wedding party. The entire family was there. It was the best day of my life.'

Back at home he sat back on the sofa and watched Charlene, who soon succeeded in teaching their son to talk. Now that he had grown into a toddler, it became even more obvious what an extraordinary little sim he was.
He was very curious and very active. Dustin believed that this little troll would occupy them very much in this life stage.

He was even cuter now and Dustin couldn't stop watching him. While Charlene was getting something to eat, he began with his toilet training. They had to put the potty in the living room because the bathroom was too small, but at this age it did not make a difference to Dennis and he could easily reach it once he had learned to use it on his own.

The next morning he started teaching Dennis to walk. Charlene had given him smart milk earlier and he looked very keen to learn.

Dustin was back to working though and he had to run to catch the teambus. At the moment his career was less important to him and he would have loved to stay at home during this important period of his son. Charlene had told him that they would manage if he would take an unpaid holiday, but Dustin reminded her that some building work would be required soon and they would need the money. He did not think much about the hard times anymore, when Beau was a toddler and he was the sole earner in the family, but financial security remained an important aspect for him.

So, although Dustin participated in his training, Dennis learned all his skills from Charlene. She was very kind and patient, even though the latter wasn't very necessary because Dennis was as clever as the other children which had been born in the neighbourhood recently. Charlene almost wished that he would have learned a bit slower so that Dustin could have seen it, but Dennis learned to walk only a few hours after he left.

And he was potty-trained as well before his return.

He had looked so sweet when he was making his first steps towards her and Charlene could not wait to tell Dustin when he came home.

Dustin was disappointed that he could not teach his son at least one skill, but a few days later he could tell Charlene about another success.
'Where have you been? I knew you would be out, but I didn't think you would come home that late.'
'I'm sorry Charlene, I wanted to be back earlier, but wait until you hear what happened. You won't believe it.'
She noticed that he was holding her very tight as if he was afraid to let her go.

Dustin had gone back with Don Lothario the day before and they had decided to go downtown for a few hours. After he had called Charlene and told her, he and Don got a taxi and went to the Lulu Lounge. The evening had started really well and everyone was in a good mood.
'Lauren was there too. It looks like she might have found someone to distract her from Ben. I don't think she met him before, but once they began talking they spent the whole evening with each other.'
'Who was it?', Charlene asked.
'I didn't know him either. I think his name was Darryl.'

When Dustin continued with his story, Charlene did not interrupt him anymore. Due to the longevity of the Pleasantview neighbours, no-one had died there since Dirk's mother and this had happened before Charlene and her father moved there. Anyway, Darleen was back among the living and although the death of a beloved sim was usually their greatest fear, it was a very rare occurence.
Charlene imagined how Nina would feel when she heard about the death of her husband Matthew. Dustin told her that Don had pleaded for his life, but had lost against the grim reaper when he had to gamble for it.
Although Matthew was not a good friend, he was very saddened by his death, remembering how he had picked up Lulu. Matthew and Nina had a nice family and their children loved their father dearly. Even the sims who did not know him were very shocked by the experience though. They all would have liked to speak for him, but the grim reaper only allowed one pledge.

After Don had lost, the reaper hovered over Matthew for a moment and then disappeared with him, leaving a gravestone in his place.
'I'm glad you didn't see him lying there, it was a heartbreaking sight. I didn't know him well, but Matthew was such a confident and energetic guy. We still had a conversation only a few hours before. And then suddenly he is there one the floor, bent and charred, it was terrible.'

But apparently the drama had not come to an end yet. The neighbours were still discussing Matthew's death, when Aemon went into the hot tub. Dustin could only imagine that Aemon had believed the thunderstorm to be over, because he did not think he was stupid enough to risk his life intentionally.

Dustin was getting ready to leave and had only come outside to say goodbye to his friends.
'When I saw Aemon, lying in the same spot as Matthew not even an hour before, I knew I had to do something. I didn't even think, I went up to the reaper and pleaded for his life. I know why they call him the grim reaper, he is a frightening sight, but I didn't care at that moment. I just thought that it could not be, two sims dying on the same day, losing a friend..'

'When I won it was great though.'

'Believe me, I never felt so strong in my entire life. I mean it was death, I beat death. He didn't like it, I think he would have liked to take Aemon as well. But he has to obey his own rules, doesn't he?'

After the grim reaper had given Aemon back his life, he walked up to Dustin and told him that he would be eternally grateful for having such a friend.
Although he was very glad for snatching his life from the reaper, Dustin's thoughts lingered on Matthew when he returned home and when he hugged Charlene, he reflected that his life would crumble to pieces if he lost her.

Or his son. Dennis had woken up while Dustin told Charlene the story and was sitting in his crib now, playing with his feet and waiting for his parents to let him out.
